Fishing Hook Gameplay

In a word, Simple! That’s it! By only using a single thumb or finger, the controls are incredibly simply!  Yet, as so often, herein lies the rub!  If too simple then users get bored and no longer play, right?  So it is with this in mind that Mobirix seemed to design this game! Players start off ready to cast off at the end of a boat anchored in a secluded and visually breathtaking bay.  With the help of a friendly (scantily clad instructor players learn how to cast and reel in their prize.

Casting is very similar to the extremely popular Hot Shots Golf (Everybody’s Golf / みんあのGOLF) in which players have a rising power bar and “Sweet Spot” to cast. Hitting that ultimate sweet spot will award players with a bonus 10% or 5% if just outside.
Once cast, players have less than three seconds to again drag the main button (reel) down to pull in their line to hook the fish. From there this where the real battle and finesse of the game comes into play!  Very accurate to real life fishing, players need to ride the red line between letting the line out and reeling in the fish.  With too much slack, the line runs out and the fish breaks free.  Too much tautness and the line snaps and the fish swims free!  By trying to master the power gauge whilst calculating the fishes distance and timing of when to let off or pull in is where this game truly ‘catches’ the unsuspecting player!!

To further up the ante, there is the “Strike” point in which if players can hit it within the right time, maximum leverage can be applied to drawing in the catch – essentially pulling up the rod, rather than simply spinning the reel. Yet as in real life fishing, trying to tackle the big swimmers, isn’t all that easy, as fish will swim here and there trying to break free.  Therefore, the aforementioned power gauge reflects that accurately by at times rising or falling slowly to rapidly changing and spiking hard and fast (principally because the fish swims either towards or away from you and then changes direction).  By striking accurately the fish on line will tire and lose some of it XP and thus make it easier to reel in!  Striking times vary per type of fish and the angler’s skill and timing of pull / push reeling.

Features of Fishing Hook

Applied anglers have the one of three choices upon successfully battling the swimming scoundrels.

Release:

This morally apt and environmentally friendly choice encourages players to free their catch back into the sea to be able to be caught another day, by awarded players a bonus 20% XP (experience points) by doing so.

Sell:

Selling your catch awarded an amount of coins, depending on the size and type of fish, which can be used to upgrade rods and tackle which in turn allow you to catch even bigger and better fish!

Add:

The add feature, keeps the caught fish in your personal fish tank, so that it can be admired and viewed at any time. Yet beware, as with any pet, stored fish, need sustenance to survive!

Tips ‘n’ Tricks to Catch the Big One on Fishing Hook!

  • Tackling the Tackle!
As with so much in this life, it takes money to make money! Fishing Hook is no exception to this, where in order to catch bigger, better, stronger and more valuable fish, players need to upgrade their gear, so the best and easiest way to progress through the game is to make the right purchase at the right time to ensure maximum rewards!
  • Coin vs XP?
As previously mentioned releasing fish will help you gain XP faster and allow you access to higher levels / different regions with different grades of fish. Typically there are roughly 11 types of fish per region and by catching all of them at least once, players are rewarded with bonus coins.  Selling caught fish rewards players with more coins and thus better equipment to catch bigger fish, yet adversely due to the slower rate of XP players need more time to level up.
So which is best? Obviously, everyone has their own personal preference, yet to progress through Fishing Hook most efficiently it is recommended to aim for XP at the lower levels to increase player’s skill and save those coins so that they can buy more advantageous equipment when it is most needed.  This also maintains player’s attention levels, as they can feel and see the progress happening without feeling stagnant by playing the same region over and over again.

  • To Retry or Not to Try?
If that frisky fish does manage to get away, players are offered the chance to try to catch the same fish again for the cost of 10 coins. ~ This is an interesting feature and if used at the appropriate time can earn players a valuable return of coins and/or XP. However, if not aiming for that last un-caught fish within the region or that “White Whale” that had eluded you thus far, it is probably best to save your coins and invest them on upgrading tackle instead.
  • Ride the Red-Line
Dangerous as it is, by learning the limits and response time of your rod, reel and line, players can hover at the 90% plus hardline! Through quick floating in this range by letting off and pulling on, the fish stays close and by only (heavily) letting off to take advantage of the “strike” the majority of battles will almost always end up with a successful catch.
  • Secure the Strike!
The “Strike” feature is best way to land large and powerful fish! Keep the line taught throughout the struggle and only let off when the strike bar appears.  Yet beware!  Once you let off, most fish will rapidly try to escape and thus the power bar will deplete very rapidly, therefore, to fully take advantage of the strike meter, players should pull in again before the strike bar hits. This lack of responsiveness may vary between rods, reels and lines, yet the bottom line is to maximize the strike for as long and hard as possible to tire out the fish and draw it closer! So, strike will the iron / rod is hot!

Personal Impressions of Fishing Hook

Essentially, Yeah! Give it a try and cast that reel!
With so many upon many games, so heavily repetitive and insistent in their blatant (and annoying) baiting of users to click and buy in-game purchases, Fishing Hook is not one of those games! Yes there is an energy bar timer (amount of hooks) that limits gameplay and which can be increased by spending in-game coins (which of course can be supplemented by spending real life money) there is not the pressure and over whelming burden to do so as in so many other games.
The basic yet complicated controls set against a pleasant and tranquil waterscape backdrop make this an easy to play and fun to return to game that offers hours of stress-free enjoyment!! That said, however, due to this exact fact, users will most probably find themselves rushing back for more and eagerly awaiting their next ‘hook’!
On a side note, the water splashed ending of certain battles, adds a refreshing and revitalizing component that inspires users to cast that one extra hook!
The only downside which I came across is that players aren’t able to choose which upgrade they buy and are simply forced to buy upgrades in the order presented. I personally would rather have the option to save a little coin on lower levels and then jump a step or two in upgrades and thus buy smarter with more efficiently purchases rather than having to buy everything!
All things considered, I personally consider this game well within the plus  spectrum as compared to so many other games which are fun to play but bombard users with so much spam and junk that the actual gameplay quickly loses value!  So once again, Yeah! Give it a try and cast that reel!  Thus our Blue Lagoon ranking is,
